Restoration
What is Masonry?
The most frequently used products, are clay brick, concrete block
and natural stone units. Sun-baked clay bricks and stone blocks
were used in the construction of the Egyptian pyramids, which after
thousands of years, are still standing today serving as testimony
of the durability of masonry.
The manufacturing
and use of masonry evolved over a long period of time and in the
modern era was prompted by the development of cavity wall construction.
When orginally developed, cavity walls consisted of two seperate
bricks or stone walls with about 2-inch air space between them.
Cavity walls were developed to reduce the problems associated with
water penetration. Water that penetrated the outer wall would then
run down that wall, while the inner wall would remain dry. Another
benefit to the cavity wall system of construction, was the ability
to support a heavy load such as a roof or a floor in muti-level
building.
As with any
building product, masonry is subject to weathering. Continous exposure
to the elements, such as acid rain; seismic movement, building settlement,
freezing and thawing cycles, impact damage and dirt take their toll.
Because of this Masonry Restoration is needed. Masonry restoration
involves everything from the replacement of common bricks to the
replacement of carved stone. CRX,
Inc., can do the total restoration job, including
all masonry trades. Our goal is to apply conservation principles
and processes for the preservation, restoration or reconstruction
of the structure, especially if they have historical value.
