Coatings
The ingress of
water and chloride ions into the structural concrete and reinforcing
steel of parking and bridge decks or suspended slabs can cause serious
structural damage. One preferred way of stopping water penetration
on these types of structures is the application of a coating that
is flexible and durable enough to withstand the movement, expansion/contraction
and vehicular traffic. These types of coating are known as Deck Coatings.
Deck Coatings can be defined as 'A pigmented coating designed for
application to horizontal surfaces such as decks and porches. In most
cases a coarse aggregate is added where slipping is a concern.'
Deck Coatings can be divided into two main catagories:
Vehicular Traffice Deck Coatings
This system is applied to concrete decks to prevent water
from entering occupied space below, and to protect the surface to
which it is applied from damage by water and salts, while providing
a slip-resistant, attractive wearing surface. This system is suitable
for surfaces subject to vehicular and heavy pedestrian traffic. It
consists of numerous components, that together form a system with
optium performance. The top coat is available in limited fade-resistant
colors. The most common are: Gray, Charcoal Gray and Tan.
Pedestrian Traffic Deck Coatings
This system is used for waterproofing concrete balconies,
plaza decks, terraces and other areas subject to pedestrian foot traffic.
Usually consists of one-part polyurethane Base Coat and a one-part
aliphatic polyurethane Top Coat with an aggregate added between coats
to provide a safe, slip-resistant, attractive walking surface. The
Top Coat is available in various fade-resistant colors.
